This guide is for the SR-655HPC+ (short chassis, vents, faceplate marked HPC+). Classic V1/V2 use SR-655HPC Setup Guide. Confirm the radio: Which 655 do I have?
(Click picture for a larger view.) Numbers match the list below. The 655 has no SSB. PA is on switch 12, not on the mode switch.
- Microphone jack — 4-pin Stryker mic.
- VOL / SQ — Volume comfortable. Squelch all the way left to start, then bring it up until the hiss just stops.
- MIC / RF (GAIN) — Mic gain and RF gain all the way right unless the receive is too hot.
- VOL / DEL (TONE) — Echo volume and echo delay. With talkback on, set to taste. Leave left if you do not want echo.
- RX TONE / COA (CLAR) — 12 o’clock. The Plus does not have a VOX knob here.
- MON / PWR — Talkback (MON) to a comfortable level, full left is off. RF power at 12 o’clock to start.
- Band A–E — Set to D on a stock radio. How do I get to bands F–L?
- AM / FM / WX — Set to AM. WX is weather receive only. Does the SR-655HPC have weather channels?
- DIM / HIC — Middle. To dim: slide to DIM, then turn the frequency knob.
- NB+ / NB — Start on ANL / the quieter side unless you need the blanker.
- NRC / PRG — Middle unless you want noise reduction or the program menu. Classic 655s had RB / PRG here.
- +10K / PA — Middle for on-air use. Do not leave this in PA. +10 kHz is the other throw.
- FREQUENCY — Channel / VFO knob.
- FUNC / COLOR / SCAN CH19 — Function menu, display color, scan / channel 19.
If you scramble the function menu, reset to factory defaults:
- Radio off. Hold FUNC + COLOR + SCAN.
- Power on. Display shows REST ALL.
- Release. Wait for REST END.
- Power off and back on.
Next: Programming the SR-655HPC. USB cable is often not in the 655 box.
